I’ve been driving for Uber for over a year now. Why? Well, we need(ed) the money and the hours are great. I know a lot of drivers and articles are spewing hate about the long hours, the low pay and being 1099 contractors and not employees. My two cents? Stop complaining. Uber has been amazing for me and for my family.

I cannot quite remember my first ride but I remember the first month or so driving. It was hard to get used to but there’s a bit of a rush when you get a request for a rider. You know you’re getting money, albeit $3.45 for a short fair or what I like to call “White Whales.” I’ve gathered a few “White Whales” over the last year. What is it? Well, its those long trips that make your night. Those trips that are sixty minutes plus. I still love driving for Uber when I can or have time too. Mostly I show up on the weekends and on holidays.

I’ve made my fair share of money on Uber. The other thing that Uber has helped me with is taxes. While I was nervous because I didn’t hold back money for taxes, I thought I would have to pay this massive amount back to the government. Turns out, the government owed me a tidy sum so I was able to bank and put away some money in savings. This was due to the mileage I put up as well as expenses while on the road. Food, coffee, fuel, car washes, candy for customers, anything that I used to do the job, I could write it off as a business expense.

I’ve also learned a few things while driving. I am a much better driver now than I was a year ago. I know more back roads, short cuts, and ways to avoid toll roads for customers. I know that if you stick with it, you can make some good money. Besides, there’s the benefit of having your car clean all the time. With three kids, the car clutter, trash, and various toys can get out of control fast. You can’t have those things in your car when you’re driving, and you need to have a clean vehicle. Another note, please use the “New Car” smell if you’re an Uber driver. Everyone compliments it, and it’s not that horrid “Black Ice” smell.

All this to say that money is out there if you work hard at it, just like any other job. You have to work to get paid. I love my day job, but I like having Uber around so I can supplement my income whenever I want. No other job in the world lets you do that.
